Er ist der Sohn von Yash Johar. Karan Johar begann
als Regieassistent und Nebendarsteller bei Adiyta Chopras

Er war damals für die Kostüme von Shah Rukh Khan zuständig
und freundete
sich dann mit SRK an.
Sein erster Film Kuch Kuch hota Hai bei dem er Regie führte
und das Drehbuch schrieb, war einer der größten Blockbuster 1998 und gewann
Filmfare Awards in allen wichtigen Kategorien. Shah Rukh Khan und Kajol hatten
ihn zu seinem ersten Projekt begleitet und spielten die Hauptrollen in
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
Top 3 der britischen Kinohitliste.
Nach den Tod seines Vaters ( Yash Johar) übernahm Karan die Firma
